Welcome to Computers and the Internet in Society. I am pleased you are joining us for this class. I want to take this opportunity to welcome you and to give you an overview of what to expect and what you need to do next. I am looking forward to this quarter with you.
Course Description
This course introduces a critical examination of the capabilities and uses of the Internet, computers and cellular communications, and how they are changing business, law, politics, health, education,entertainment, and society.
General Purpose
Upon completion, students will be able to:
- Analyze the effect of the Internet, computers, and cellular communications on individuals, culture, and society.
- Analyze the effects of the Internet, computers, and cellular communications on institutions, including education, business, economics, and politics.
- Judge the effect of the Internet and computers on law and ethics.
- Consider trends that may affect the future.
Requirements
- Access to a computer with an Internet connection
- E-mail address
- You must have access to a latest version of a browser such as Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari and IE 9.
Orientation
Complete the De Anza Distance Learning Online Orientation - On the De Anza Distance Learning page, click on Online Orientation and choose CIS 2: Computers and the Internet in Society from the list of orientations.
Scholarly Conduct
The De Anza College Schedule, in the section titled "Academic Integrity," states that "The submission of work which is not the product of a student's personal effort, or work which in some way circumvents the given rules and regulations will not be tolerated." An infraction of Academic Integrity may result in a failing grade.
Discussion Questions
Discussion question responses must be at least 150 words. They must reflect critical thought. To receive the full points for a DQ, the students need to clearly state and support their ideas. Whenever possible, please try to relate the course content to real-world applications from work experiences.
Participation
Participation online is very important. To earn full participation points, the students are expected to post at least 2 substantive messages a day for 4 out of 7 days a week. Adding something of substance would consist of new ideas, perspectives, pointed follow-up questions, responses to discussion questions, etc. Initial DQ responses do not count for participation.
Please note that both quantity and quality are important considerations when it comes to participation. A message that says simply, "I agree," for example, would not constitute participation because it does not add anything of substance to the discussion.
Assignments
The assignments will be graded online. When you complete an assignment, you must upload it and send me an e-mail notification that the assignment is complete. Otherwise I don't know. Your grade on the assignment will be returned electronically.
Late Work
Late work will be assigned a 10% per day penalty. Work submitted over two weeks late will earn a maximum of 10%.
Tests
There will be a final exam.

Grading is on an absolute scale as shown below.
