Class communications setup - Winter 2009
Types of communication:
- Class discussion list server
- Individual requests to the instructor
Set up your e-mail manager:
You may use your regular e-mail account, or you may wish to set one up for use with this class.
Many students use Google or Yahoo or some other commercial web site for their e-mail service.
You may use any e-mail service you wish; pick one.
You must always send your e-mail from the same e-mail address every time you send e-mail to the class list server.
Allow your e-mail manager to receive class messages:
Because the list server sends messages to all students in the class,
and because the instructor sometimes sends messages to all students in the class,
your e-mail manager may treat this mail as spam.
You must either set up your e-mail account so class e-mail is not considered as spam,
or keep looking for this e-mail with the spam.
Consult the instructions for your e-mail manager for information on how to set it up so
the instructor's e-mail address and class list server address are in your Safe List
,
so you can receive e-mail from them.
The e-mail addresses which will be sending you messages are:
javascript-winter-2009@listserv.fhda.edu
oldham@voyager.deanza.edu
Join the class list server:
The class list server is used by all students to discuss the work in the class.
Announcements, changes in assignments, review material for exams, and other material
are also sent to the class list server by the instructor.
So, you need to sign up for the class list server.
-
You must send the sign up message from the e-mail address that you will use to send and receive
all list server messages.
- Send an empty e-mail message to
join-javascript-winter-2009@listserv.fhda.edu
- You will be sent a confirmation message.
- You must reply to the confirmation message within 72 hours.
- If your attempt to join the list server fails,
please forward the failure message to the instructor:
oldham@voyager.deanza.edu
This failure sometimes happens with Yahoo e-mail accounts.
Communication discussions:
-
Send all discussion of the work in the class to the class list server.
For example, you might ask:
What are the questions on the exam? OR How do you make the color of a border red?
- All e-mail to the list server must be sent from your e-mail address which you used to join the list server.
- Send all discussion of the work in the class to the class list server:
javascript-winter-2009@listserv.fhda.edu
-
All students should send answers to the questions on the list server.
Usually the instructor will provide an answer, but often this is later than when students have already answered the question.
Besides, the student discussions and answers are usually better than just an answer from the instructor.
Communication to the instructor:
-
Send all individual requests to the instructor.
For example, you might say:
Please grade my lab 4. OR I need to reschedule my exam date, because I will be out of town on business.
- In order to be sure the instructor answers your mail in a timely manner, the subject should begin with:
JavaScript
- Send all requests for lab grading, or other instructor action, to the instructor:
oldham@voyager.deanza.edu
