Managing File Systems
File and Folder Permissions
Permission Changes When Content Is Copied or Moved

  • Copy operations always create new versions of the content that is being copied. These new versions will inherit the permission settings of the target location.
  • Move operations affect permissions differently depending on the destination location relative to the source location. If the source and target locations are on the same volume, the destination content keeps whatever permissions it originally had, regardless of the destination folder's permissions. If the source and target locations are on different volumes, the moving operation is just like a copy operation.
