Partition and Volume Management
Extending Partitions and Volumes
- You can extend partitions and volumes using the Disk Management MMC console or the DiskPart command-line utility. This task requires an Administrator-equivalent user account.
- Some of the considerations when extending basic disk partitions are:
- The system and boot partitions can be expanded
- Free space must be available that is not assigned to another partition
- The free disk space must be contiguous with the partition being expanded
- The partition being expanded must have either no file system or is formatted with NTFS
- The partition expansion is immediate and does not require a reboot of the computer to complete
- Some of the considerations when expanding dynamic disk volumes are:
- The system and boot volume can be expanded
- A simple volume can be extended using any free disk space on the same physical disk
- The free disk space used to extend a simple volume does not have to be contiguous
- If a simple volume is extended with free space from another physical disk, it becomes a spanned volume
- A spanned volume cannot be used to create a larger striped or fault-tolerant volume
- The volume expansion is immediate and does not require a reboot of the computer to complete
