IPv6 Address Types

The following types of IPv6 addresses are:

  • Link-local Unicast: A unicast address defines a delivery destination that identifies a specific single interface.
  • Global Unicast: A global address can be routed as a public address on the Internet through routers and networks. Global unicast IPv6 addresses are usually assigned by an ISP or public registration authority.
  • Unique Local Unicast: The unique local address type is a replacement address type for the deprecated site-local address type.
  • Multicast: An IPv6 multicast address serves the same purpose as an IPv4 multicast address.
  • Anycast: The assignment of anycast addresses to a network interface is currently restricted to routers only.
  • Special addresses: Two special addresses exist in IPv6, the loopback address (0:0:0:0:0:0:0:1 or ::1) and the unspecified address (0:0:0:0:0:0:0:0 or ::).
  • Teredo: The Teredo client is built in as part of Windows but it is inactive unless its services are required. Teredo is a technology that allows IPv6 data to be tunneled over an IPv4 network that is using Network Address Translation (NAT).
